Headshot vs. Body Shot

Body shots are still requested sometimes by agent but your main photo on LA Casting or Actors Access will be a thumbnail size photo. Make sure your main focus is a headshot (from the shoulders up). Any other shots will go in the secondary positions online. Headshots reveal more of the eyes and gives the agent or casting director the best idea of what you really look like.

The Commercial Headshot

It’s generally easier for actors to break into the business by booking a commercial. Commercials are always looking for new faces because there’s always a product that needs to be sold. Since you’re trying to sell something your headshot must make you seem friendly. Which is why you must SMILE in your commercial headshot.

Make sure you choose a style that is consistent with the style you will be wearing everyday so you will look like the person in the photo submitted when you go to the audition. Your photos should look like you at your best! Casting Directors hate it when actors look different in person than the photo submitted.

What to wear for your headshot

Wear solid, bright colors. Some call these colors electric or brilliant. Try to avoid earth tones which can look dull. Pick colors that attract attention to you, not cause you to blend in. With casting now being done online the photos that jump out at the casting director or agent are the ones that will more than likely be selected for auditions. Another great tip is to choose fabrics that have a sateen or silk type finish to them. These fabrics look awesome in a color photo.

Every actor should sign up with LAcasting.com and Actorsaccess.com if you want a chance to audition for national commercials and film & television roles. Another website, castingfrontier.com is being used by major casting directors but I would only suggest signing up for this website if you’re already represented and getting auditions on a regular basis.
